DATA & FILE OVERVIEW

File List:

1. Holeboard project_DatasetforR.csv
Cleaned dataset used for all statistical analysis in RStudio.

2. Holeboard_Ethogram.docx
Ethogram used for all observation of video footage and coding of play behaviours on Boris.

3. Holeboard_IOR_play_C_T.R
R script used to conduct inter-observer reliability of play behaviour observations, completed by two observers (C and T). IOR analysis was conducted by JH.

4. Holeboard_cleaned_Rscript.R
R script used for all statistical analysis and generating graphs for this experiment.

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR SUPPLEMENTARY FILES:

1. Holeboard project_DatasetforR.csv

Each calf has 20 rows of data, corresponding with 20 testing trials.

Column definitions:

Calf_ID: unique ID's given to calves

Pair: Housing pair (all calves were housed in pairs during the experiment)

Order_pair: Order of testing within-pairs, to balance for testing order between treatments. Within each pair, one calf was assigned to each treatment.

Treatment: feeding treatment assigned to calves; E = enhanced (up to 12L/day), R = restricted (6L/day)

Phase: phase of testing. L = initial learning (trials 1-14), and R = re-learning (trials 15-20)

Session_raw: raw session number which in earlier files included training sessions 1-4.

Session: adjusted session to reflect only testing trials 1-20.

Run: time spent running during the trial (s)

Jump: number of jumps during the trial

Kick: number of kicks during the trial - NOTE kick was excluded from further analysis after poor IOR between observers

Head_shake: number of head shakes during the trial

Total_freq: total frequency (point) play behaviours, i.e. the sum of jump, buck, and head shake during the trial

WM: working memory

WMwSR: working memory adjusted for calves' success rate - see publication methods for description of this adjustment

GWM: general working memory

RM: reference memory

RMwSR: reference memory adjusted for calves' success rate

Visits: total number of bucket visits including re-visits

Voc: number of vocalisations in the trial

Latency: latency to touch the first bucket from the start of the trial (when calves entered the testing arena)

Trial_duration: calves' trial duration (in seconds)

Success: number of baited buckets found in the trial (out of 4 possible baited buckets)

Success_prop: proportion of baited buckets found in the trial (out of 1)
